Political Note: A somewhat unknown on the School Committee. Sporting an Irish name and from the historical Irish heart of the city, Murphy has no clear allies or enemies. While not necessarily common, lawyers in Springfield politics have been muddied based on their client list, but Murphy has not experienced this. The ex-husband of a former Committee Member, Murphy’s political success is at least partially attributed to association with his wife. However, Murphy also had another advantage when he won his four-year term. His opponent, Joe Flebotte was a full-time student in Rhode Island during the fall campaign. That and his connection to his ex-wife is at least partly due to his near 50 point win.
